USA: Common App & Coalition

In the US, most students use the Common Application. It’s a one-stop shop where you can enter all your personal info, school history, extracurriculars, and that all-important personal essay. Some schools also like a few extra essays, so leave time for those too.

If the Common App feels too mainstream for you, there’s also the Coalition Application which is not as widely used but designed to help underrepresented students. Either way, keep an eye on deadlines. Between Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision, dates sneak up fast. Plus, you’ll need teachers to submit recommendation letters separately. Consider this your friendly reminder to nudge them. Early.

UK: UCAS

UK UCAS

If you’re looking at the UK, say hello to UCAS. Think of it like a one-size-fits-all portal that sends your application to up to five courses at different universities. You only write one personal statement for all your choices which also makes it important that you make sure it paints a clear picture of who you are. Deadlines matter like crazy especially for Oxford, Cambridge, and medicine. Once you hit submit, most of your updates will come through UCAS, so check your account regularly. No surprises there.

Europe isn’t one big application family. Every country, and often every university, plays by its own rules.

Applying to the Netherlands? You’ll need to register on Studielink. Germany? Uni-Assist will do most of the heavy lifting before your application hits the university. Spain, Italy, France? Expect to go straight to each school’s own portal and brace yourself for some untranslated forms or PDF uploads that feel like puzzles. Deadlines and requirements vary a ton, so do your homework early.

In Ontario, OUAC is your friend which is one application centre for most of the province’s universities. Elsewhere in Canada? Every school usually has its own portal. Think personal essays, a list of your extracurriculars, and your grades front and center. Deadlines tend to hit in January or February, so keep that timeline in mind and don’t leave anything to the last minute.

Australia: State-Based Portals

Australia Application Portals
Down under, it’s a state-by-state story. New South Wales and the ACT use UAC. Victoria? VTAC. Queensland? QTAC. Other states have their own portals too. You’ll rank all the courses you want to apply to ( so put your dream choice at the top ) and pay a one-time fee. Deadlines usually hit mid-year, and if you receive an offer from one of your top-ranked choices, that’s the one you’ll probably take. Priorities matter here.

Every region you apply to will have its quirks whether that’s one central portal like Common App or UCAS, or a whole mix of portals like in Europe, Canada, and Australia. The trick is to make a list early, stay on top of each portal’s requirements and deadlines, and keep all your documents handy.

It’s not as simple as filling out a few forms. Everything in your application has to tie together. Think of this process as a clean slate to write your story. It’s one chance to show who you are and why colleges shouldn’t miss out on you.
